Scope of Practice for Recreational Therapists (CTRS) - Services are INDIRECT. We will be modeling and training directly with caregivers, to best support the individual, while providing various supports to enhance the individual’s independence in the areas targeted.
Recreation Therapy is the use of recreational activities to improve or increase a persons quality of life. This can mean learning leisure skills, improving functional skills to be able to engage in the types of activities one enjoys, or practicing these skills in daily life.
In the provision of INDIRECT Recreation Therapy services, therapists work with caregivers in order to become familiar with resources, both in the community and at home, that will allow a person to improve functional skills (social skills, movement, planning, etc.), become more familiar with leisure activities or opportunities, and to practice these skills.
Therapists will work in all settings (home, day support, etc.) to become familiar with each individual and their routines, habits, and preferences, in order to create a support plan. The support plan will then be implemented by providing training to caregivers in the best way to support each individual. The training may include connection to resources, learning new skills, how to become a part of an outside group, transition in to new activities, as well as on-going ways to support these activities on a daily basis through engaging and interactive programs.
Recreation Therapy is a great collaborative therapy and works closely with all other disciplines in order to reach the goals and benchmarks set by each therapy service.
